Right place wrong time

I met him when I was 26.

He was 28.

We clicked immediately. Same humour. Same values. Same weird little habits. We could talk for hours and somehow never run out of things to say.

But I wasn’t ready.

I wanted to travel. Build my career. Figure myself out. I didn’t want anything serious.

He did.

So he walked away.

Three years later, we found each other again.

This time, I was ready.

I wanted the relationship. The home. The future.

But he had just started a new job in Cape Town and was completely focused on rebuilding his life.

He told me he loved me.

But he couldn’t give me what I wanted.

So I let him go.

Then, two years later, he came back.

By then, I was engaged.

He asked me if I was happy.

I said yes.

He looked at me for a long time and said,

“I always thought we’d eventually get it right.”

That sentence has stayed with me ever since.

Because the horrible part is…

I think we would have.

If we’d met at the right time.

If I’d been ready when he was.

If he’d been ready when I was.

If we’d somehow managed to want the same life at the same moment.

Instead, every time one of us was ready…

the other wasn’t.

And now I’m getting married to someone else.

He’s a genuinely good man.

He loves me.

He shows up.

He wants the same things I do.

So why am I still wondering about the man who never quite became mine?

Did we really miss our chance?

Or am I romanticising something that was never meant to happen?

COMPATIBILITY

9/10

The connection appears exceptionally strong, with shared values, natural chemistry and an emotional bond that survived years apart. But compatibility isn’t simply about how well two people fit. It’s also about whether their lives can actually fit together.

COMMUNICATION

7/10

Neither person appears to have intentionally misled the other. The difficult decisions were communicated honestly, but sometimes honesty doesn’t make a missed opportunity hurt any less.

EMOTIONAL SAFETY

8/10

There seems to be genuine care and respect between you both. The emotional difficulty comes less from instability and more from the lingering question of what could have been.

TIMING

3/10

This may be the biggest obstacle of all. You can meet someone wonderful and still not be in a position to build a life with them.

GROWTH POTENTIAL

5/10

The connection may always matter, but that doesn’t mean it should be pursued. Sometimes growth means recognising that a meaningful relationship can belong to your past without being unfinished business.

OVERALL RELATIONSHIP SCORE

8 / 10

⸻

I’m a firm believer in what’s meant for u will never miss you. It’s so easy to idealize what could have been over what actually was. I also believe that love is the most powerful force on earth and from what i understand that this love even when presented to you at its very peak, had you considering options beyond it. Love can exist without commitment, but a lasting relationship requires love to become a choice.

I don’t know the full story but if you guys were aligned enough he could have pushed to do those things along side you. Sadly the same kinda applies to when you guys had another shot, he loved you but whether it was hurt or his turn that made him waiver, he wavered none the less. What is the right time who decides that? And wouldn’t it then also be decided that it’s the right thing if the time aligned?

Furthermore Two people decide through what they are willing to choose, prioritise and build.

⸻

You may never stop wondering “What if?”

But you don’t have to answer every what if.

Sometimes the greatest act of choosing yourself is accepting that a beautiful connection can be real…

and still not be yours.

Because hardest of all, when you both had the opportunity to choose each other, did you?

⸻

Every heart is made of a thousand pieces. Each one holds a story.

Yours might be the one that helps someone else feel a little less alone.

Can two people be right for each other… and still miss their chance?

Is there such a thing as the wrong time for the right person?

Or if two people truly want each other, do they eventually find a way to choose each other?
